The composite score system
Every AP exam reports a final score from 1 to 5, but that number isn't calculated directly from your raw answers. Instead, College Board first converts your performance into a composite score — a single number on a scale that's different for every exam (100 for some, 108 for others, 150 for AP Biology, and so on).
The composite score combines two parts: your multiple-choice (MCQ) section and your free-response (FRQ) section, each converted to points on the composite scale according to that exam's specific weighting. Once your composite score is calculated, it's compared against cutoff thresholds to determine your final 1-5 score.
MCQ vs FRQ weighting
The split between multiple-choice and free-response varies a lot by subject. Some examples:
- AP Calculus AB/BC: 50% MCQ, 50% FRQ — a perfectly even split, both worth 54 of the 108 composite points.
- AP Biology: Also 50/50, but on a 150-point scale (75 points each).
- AP Environmental Science: 60% MCQ, 40% FRQ — multiple choice counts for more than most AP science exams.
- AP Psychology: About 67% MCQ, 33% FRQ — with 100 multiple-choice questions, MCQ dominates the score.
- AP Computer Science A: 55% MCQ, 45% FRQ.
This means the same raw percentage correct can lead to very different outcomes depending on the exam. Doing well on FRQs matters more for AP Calc than for AP Psych, simply because of how the points are distributed.
How 1-5 cutoffs are set
Once your composite score is calculated, it needs to map to a 1-5 AP score. College Board doesn't use a fixed percentage (like "90% = a 5") — instead, a committee sets cutoffs each year through a process called equating, which adjusts for how difficult that year's specific exam was compared to previous years.
This is why cutoffs shift by a few points from year to year. A composite of 75 on AP Chemistry might be a 5 one year and the top of the 4 range the next, depending on how the overall student population performed and how the exam committee calibrated difficulty.

This is the most important thing to understand about any AP score calculator — including the ones on this site: College Board never publishes the current year's exact composite-to-score cutoffs before official scores are released in July. Every calculator you'll find online, including this one, uses cutoffs estimated from recent years' historical data.
That means your estimated score is a close approximation, not a guarantee. It's most reliable for scores that fall clearly in the middle of a range (well above or below a cutoff) and least reliable for scores that land right on a boundary.
How weighting differs across history and language exams
History exams like APUSH and AP World History add another layer of complexity: instead of one FRQ section, they split free-response into Short-Answer Questions (SAQ), a Document-Based Question (DBQ), and a Long Essay Question (LEQ) — each with its own point value and weight. The DBQ is typically the single highest-weighted essay because it tests the broadest range of skills (using documents, contextualizing, and building an argument).
Language exams (AP Lang and AP Lit) use three essays instead, each scored 0-6 by trained readers, with all three combined making up just over half of your final composite score.
Tips for estimating your score accurately
- Be honest about FRQ scoring — it's easy to overestimate how many points a grader would actually award for partial credit.
- Use a recent released exam's official scoring guidelines if you're scoring your own practice FRQs, not just a gut feeling.
- Remember that a score near a cutoff boundary could go either way once real cutoffs are set — don't panic over being 1-2 points short.
