Billable Hours Calculator
Calculate your total billable amount and utilization rate
Frequently Asked Questions
Billable amount = billable hours × hourly rate. If you track time in minutes, convert to decimal hours first (minutes ÷ 60) — for example, 1 hour 15 minutes is 1.25 hours.
Utilization rate = billable hours ÷ total hours worked, expressed as a percentage. It measures what portion of your working time is actually generating revenue, versus time spent on admin, business development, or other non-billable work.
Most firms round to the nearest increment they bill in — commonly 6-minute (0.1 hour) or 15-minute (0.25 hour) increments — check your firm's specific billing policy, since rounding conventions can meaningfully affect totals over many entries.
If you bill different types of work at different rates (e.g., a senior rate and a junior/paralegal rate), calculate each rate's hours × rate separately, then add the totals — this calculator's multi-rate mode does exactly that.
