TRIR Calculator

TRIR = (Number of OSHA-recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total hours worked by all employees. The 200,000 figure represents 100 employees working 40 hours/week, 50 weeks/year — the OSHA-standard baseline for comparing rates across companies of different sizes.

Work-related injuries or illnesses resulting in death, days away from work, restricted work or job transfer, medical treatment beyond first aid, loss of consciousness, or a significant injury/illness diagnosed by a physician — per OSHA recordkeeping rules (29 CFR 1904).

It varies significantly by industry, but a TRIR at or below your industry's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) average is generally considered good. Many general industries target a TRIR under 3.0, with top-performing companies well under 1.0.

TRIR counts all OSHA-recordable incidents. DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred) rate only counts the more severe subset of recordables that resulted in days away from work, restricted duty, or job transfer — DART is always equal to or lower than TRIR.
