Divide the area to pave by one paver's footprint (including its joint gap), round up, then add a waste allowance for cuts — 10% for a straight pattern, 20%+ for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
Diagonal, herringbone, and circular patterns require far more edge cuts than a straight/running-bond layout, so they need a larger waste allowance (typically 20-25% vs. 10%).
A typical patio needs about 4 inches of compacted gravel sub-base; driveways need more. Volume = area × depth, at roughly 1.6 tons per cubic yard.
It's swept into the joints between pavers after laying and hardens to lock them in place and resist weeds — roughly one 50 lb bag covers about 80 sq ft.
