Board feet = (thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet) ÷ 12. One board foot equals a 1×12-inch board that's 1 foot long (144 cubic inches).
Lineal (linear) feet just measures length regardless of width or thickness. Board feet accounts for the full volume, which is why hardwood is usually priced per board foot.
10-15% is typical for project lumber to cover knots, cracks, warping, and cutting waste.
MBF means "thousand board feet" — a common unit for pricing large lumber orders, especially framing lumber sold in bulk.
