(Distance ÷ MPG) × price per gallon. For example, a 300-mile trip at 30 MPG and $3.50/gallon costs (300 ÷ 30) × $3.50 = $35.
On a 30 MPG car, adding 5 MPG (to 35) cuts fuel cost per mile by about 14%, since cost scales with 1/MPG, not MPG directly — small MPG gains matter more at the low end (e.g. 15→20 MPG) than the high end (35→40 MPG).
