Each day in your date range is checked: US federal holidays and weekends don't consume PTO (in standard mode), so only remaining weekdays count as PTO days used. A well-timed trip around a long weekend or holiday can cost far fewer PTO days than its total calendar length.
Standard mode assumes a Monday-Friday schedule, so weekends are free and don't use PTO. Shift-worker mode assumes every day (including weekends) is a scheduled workday unless it's a recognized holiday, matching schedules where weekends aren't automatically off.
The 11 US federal holidays, calculated for the actual year of your trip (including the Saturday→Friday / Sunday→Monday "observed" shift when a holiday falls on a weekend), the same federal calendar used by government offices and most standard corporate PTO policies.
Booking a trip that includes a Monday or Friday holiday effectively gives you a free extra day off — e.g., a trip from Friday through the following Tuesday around Labor Day weekend only costs 1 PTO day (the Tuesday) instead of 2, since Saturday/Sunday/Monday are already off.
