Overage fee = (total miles driven − total mileage allowance) × cost per mile over. The total allowance is your annual mileage limit × the number of years in your lease term — for example, 12,000 miles/year over a 3-year lease gives a 36,000-mile total allowance.

Most leases charge somewhere between $0.10 and $0.30 per mile over the limit, with $0.15-$0.25 being especially common — check your specific lease agreement, since it varies by manufacturer and vehicle.

Divide your current odometer reading by the number of months you've had the car to get your average monthly mileage, then multiply that by your full lease term in months to project your ending mileage. This calculator does that projection for you.

Common options include driving less for the rest of the term, buying additional miles upfront from the leasing company (often cheaper per-mile than the end-of-lease overage rate), or negotiating to buy out the lease instead of returning the vehicle.
