Frequently Asked Questions

Sale price = Original price × (1 − discount % ÷ 100). A $50 item with a 20% discount is $50 × 0.80 = $40, saving you $10.
Discount % = (Original price − Sale price) ÷ Original price × 100. An item that drops from $80 to $60 has a ($80−$60) ÷ $80 × 100 = 25% discount.
Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together — 20% off followed by an extra 10% off is NOT a 30% discount. It's $100 × 0.80 = $80, then $80 × 0.90 = $72, an effective discount of 28%, not 30%. This calculator's 'stack an additional discount' field applies this correctly.
Original price = Sale price ÷ (1 − discount % ÷ 100). If an item is $60 after a 25% discount, the original price was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Discounts are almost always applied to the price before sales tax — the store first reduces the price, then calculates tax on that lower amount. Enter your local sales tax rate to see the final out-the-door price including tax on the discounted amount.
